How to Choose the Depth of an Illuminated Channel Letter

There is no universal depth that works for every illuminated channel letter. Two letters with the same overall height can require different constructions because stroke width, face colour, acrylic diffusion and LED optics change the available light path.

Depth and LED-to-face distance

One of the main variables is the distance between the LED and the illuminated face. If modules are too close to a translucent face, individual light points can become visible. Increasing distance can help light mix, but unnecessary depth increases material, weight and visual bulk.

Stroke width can be more important than overall height

A narrow letter may not provide enough space for the same module layout used in a broad character. Very narrow strokes can require different optics, module orientation, edge lighting or a change in construction.

LED optics and module type

Different signage modules are designed for different depth ranges and beam patterns. A system intended for a shallow channel can behave differently from one designed for deeper cabinets. Module spacing should therefore follow the selected product and actual geometry.

Acrylic diffusion and internal surfaces

The light-diffusing properties of the face and the reflectivity of the interior influence uniformity. A more efficient optical system can sometimes achieve an even face without increasing depth.

Construction, fixing and service

Letter depth also needs to accommodate returns, backing, wiring, drainage where relevant, mounting details and service access. The correct depth is therefore a balance between optical performance and practical fabrication.
